There are only 21 outs to get in a seven-inning high school baseball game, but junior A.J. Prendergast struck out 20 hitters en route to a no-hitter against Coral Springs High School.

The lone base runner to reach came via catcher interference. After striking out 20 hitters, Prendergast got the last batter to ground out to second, completing the no-hitter.

Prendergast credits the offense for scoring six runs to help him settle in and felt like he had complete control of all of his pitches.

“The pitch calling from Coach Fine was sensational,” said Prendergast. “We stuck with the game plan going heavy with the fastball and mixed in the curveball to be successful.”

His team scored six runs which included a five-run fifth inning. Gavin Gargiulo, Nathan Maestre, and Haiden Walters all had hits while the Panthers capitalized on the Colts’ four errors.

For Coach Fine, he thought it a great team win but could not be happier for Prendergast for how well he pitched.

“It was a special performance tonight from A.J.,” Fine said. “Obviously, the most important part was getting the win over a talented school in Coral Springs, but his performance will go down in the history books at Charter.”

Coral Springs Charter returns Friday, March 12, as they take on Somerset Academy at 7 p.m.
